Konstantin Somov experienced his first success during his last years of studies in St. Petersburg, when he became interested in historical subjects and created frivolous genre paintings. In Paris his genre works acquired grotesque theatricality, eroticism, gloom and irony. By the end of the nineteenth century, Konstantin had returned to Russia and took up illustration, largely due his publications in the "World of Art" magazine.
During this period he also created illustrations for "Count Nulin" by A. Pushkin , N. Gogol's short stories "The Nose" and "Nevsky Prospekt" and many other literary works and magazines. Somov was also in demand as a portrait painter and constantly received numerous highly paid orders however, at the peak of his popularity, even despite his personal exhibition in St.

Constantin Andreevich Somov was born in St. Petersburg on November 30, into the family of the senior curator at the Hermitage, artist and art historian, Andrei Ivanovich Somov and his wife, Nadezhda Constantinovna, an excellent musician.
The family had a big collection of paintings, etchings, watercolors, and big library; the artists were frequent guests in the house. Constantin started to learn to play piano, singing, and painting early. From till , he studied at the Academy of Arts, where from he took a course at Ilya Repin's studio. Later he wrote that the first five years in the Academy were a lost and fruitless time.
