Konstantin Somov experienced his first success during his last years of studies in St. Petersburg, when he became interested in historical subjects and created frivolous genre paintings. In Paris his genre works acquired grotesque theatricality, eroticism, gloom and irony. By the end of the nineteenth century, Konstantin had returned to Russia and took up illustration, largely due his publications in the "World of Art" magazine.

During this period he also created illustrations for "Count Nulin" by A. Pushkin , N. Gogol's short stories "The Nose" and "Nevsky Prospekt" and many other literary works and magazines.
