Chiara was born in and died in , because of an incurable illness. Nineteen years full of life, of love, of faith. Two years, the last ones, also filled with pain and suffering, but always in love and light, a light that shone around her, and that came from within: from her heart filled with God! How can this be? How can a girl of 17, 18 years live a suffering like this, without any kind of human hope, spreading love, serenity, peace, faith?
Obviously, this is a grace from God, but this grace was also prepared and accompanied by human collaboration: the collaboration of Chiara herself, certainly, but also of her parents and her friends …. We got married when we were 26 and our greatest desire was to have children, but we had to wait 11 years. Ruggero could not conceive a marriage without children, and when he was with friends who had children, he suffered a lot; but he continued to pray, even on the truck during his long work trips.
Once again he asked for the grace in a shrine of our diocese and so it happened. With her arrival, we felt the grace of the sacrament of marriage more deeply: this daughter completed our union and increased the love between us. Chiara had many toys. Then i suggested she give some of them to the poor children. I brought it to her and she began to fill it.
Chiara grows up to be beautiful and healthy, deeply loved by her parents, and in particular by her maternal grandparents, who seemed to be reborn thanks to this great joy. I have rediscovered the Gospel.. Now I want to make this wonderful book the only goal of my life. On June 17, , at her first Gen3 Congress, together with many other girls from around the world, she grabbed a pen and paper and wrote to Chiara Lubich:.
This was the first Congress for me and, I must say, it was a wonderful experience. I have rediscovered Jesus Forsaken in a special way. I felt him in every neighbor that passes me by. I think that a video of Chiara Lubich that was shown to us when we were still little kids was a turning point for us. At a certain point Chiara Lubich opened her heart as she answered a question from some of the Gen.
She confided her secret to us: Jesus Forsaken. And Chiaretta did it, like me and many others—right away, with a momentum that I can still feel today. Many would confide in her their doubts and struggles, as they found in her an extraordinary capability to listen, sensitivity, and a profoundness which was truly unusual for an adolescent.
The treatment is painful and she wants to be informed of every detail of her illness. Her life was like a magnet drawing us towards her. One of the medical staff, Dr. The subsequent chemotherapy treatment caused her to lose her hair, which she was very proud of. In July the tumour spreads quickly. Chiara Luce is not yet 18 years of age and she loses the use of her legs.
At one point, Chiara Luce suffers a severe bleeding and she is in danger of dying. Her young friends take turns in praying all night. The doctors are in doubt whether to carry out a blood transfusion and prolong her suffering or just let her pass away…They decide to carry out the transfusion. From that moment, Chiara Luce lives another year, a year which is very decisive for her.
She also participates in their congresses and activities through messages, postcards and posters, and she tries to spread the spirituality of unity among her friends and school companions. Instead now I feel enfolded in a marvelous plan of God which is slowly being unveiled to me. Chiara Luce is very happy! In fact, from the very moment she woke up, she desired receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.
This eventually becomes the food for her departing journey. She herself gives instructions on how she wanted to be dressed; she chooses the music, the songs, the flowers and the Mass readings. There is a great sense of peace. To her father Ruggero, who had asked her if she is always willing to donate her corneas, Chiara Luce answers with a bright smile.
Two thousand people attended her funeral. The mayor of Sassello shut down the town so people would be able to attend. Wikimedia Commons Elemento de Wikidata. Movimiento de los Focolares [ editar ]. She then asked for her new name as this was going to be the start of a new life for her. Lubich gave her the name Chiara Luce. This was a kind of a play on words, since in Italian "Chiara" is a common girl's name, taken for example from the name of Clare of Assisi , but it is also an everyday word meaning "clear. In the summer of , Chiara felt a sting of pain in her shoulder while playing tennis.
At first she thought nothing of it, but when the pain continued to be present she underwent a series of tests. The doctors then discovered she had a rare and painful form of bone cancer , osteogenic sarcoma. In response, Chiara simply declared, "It's for you, Jesus; if you want it, I want it, too. Throughout the treatment process, Chiara refused to take any morphine so she could stay aware.
She felt it was important to know her illness and pain so she could offer up her sufferings. She said, "It reduces my lucidity and there's only one thing I can do now: to offer my suffering to Jesus because I want to share as much as possible in his sufferings on the cross. These walks were beneficial to the other patient but caused Chiara great pain.
Her parents often encouraged her to stay and rest but she would simply reply, "I'll be able to sleep later on. One of her doctors, Antonio Delogu, said, "Through her smile, and through her eyes full of light, she showed us that death doesn't exist; only life exists. Her life was like a magnet drawing us to her. Chiara kept her spirits up, even when the harsh chemotherapy caused her hair to fall out.
When a lock of her hair would fall, Chiara would simply offer it to God, saying, "For you, Jesus. She wrote to him, "I don't need this money any more. I have everything. To help prepare her parents for life after she died, Chiara made them dinner reservations for Valentine's Day after they refused to leave her bedside and ordered them to not return until after midnight.
At Christmas she wrote, "Holy Christmas Thank you for everything.

Happy New Year," on a Christmas card and hid it among some blank ones for her mother to find later. Chiara's faith and spirit never dwindled even after the cancer left her unable to walk and a CAT scan showed that any hope of remission was gone. In response, she simply said, "If I had to choose between walking again and going to Heaven, I wouldn't hesitate.
I would choose Heaven.
